Gearing up for our Spring sale on April 11
It's that time again when everyone at UC Books to Prisoners starts in on the steps necessary to pull off our annual spring book sale!
This spring, the date is Saturday, April 11th. Same 9 to 5 hours.
This means our book sorters are working just a little harder and a little faster on setting aside those donated books that we will put out for sale because
- they do not fit the strict rules of Very Good to Like New condition that the prisons now require;
- they aren't asked for by prisoners enough to warrant our limited shelf space;
- the content is disallowed by the prisons;
- they weigh too much for us to afford the shipping costs;
- we already have enough of that particular title or topic to meet prisoners' needs.
We always want to make clear to our generous book donors that not all they donate goes into the prisons. But all donated books go to support the cause precisely because of the fact that we can use them to raise funds for the mission of Books to Prisoners:
providing free books to people incarcerated in Illinois and promoting education and engagement in issues of incarceration and education in our prisons.
If you are at all interested in helping with the work of putting on the spring sale, contact us and we'll send you the Sign Up Genius form. We always need:
people to put up flyers
people to put out the yard signs the week and day before
people to gather lots and lots boxes (preferred size are the size of printer paper boxes)
people to set up the tables and other furniture
people to haul supplies from the basement to the first floor
people to arrange the books and merchandise the day before the sale
people to staff the sale as cashiers, baggers, floor help, take out help, etc.
people to take down the sale afterwards, meaning:
people to box up the unsold remainder
people to take down the furniture, put away the supplies, tidy up after.
