Volunteer Jail Library

New volunteers to act as jail librarians are always welcome. Jail librarians are expected to be able to work at least one Friday a month. They must be at least 21 years of age and pass a background check conducted by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office. To apply to become a volunteer jail librarian, email to [email protected], stating your interest and any relevant qualifications you may have.

The general process includes a briefing and interview with the Jail Library Program Coordinator, or current jail librarians, which provides information about the organization and a review of volunteer duties. This is followed by an interview and briefing on jail procedures and regulations with the Jail Program Coordinator, after which the Sheriff’s department will conduct a routine background check. Once cleared, you will be contacted to review expectations and address questions. Your first library session will serve as a training session.
